Taiwan's government is a multiparty democracy. It contains five branches of government, they are: Legislative Yuan, Judicial Yuan, Executive Yuan, Examination Yuan, and Control Yuan. Ma Ying-jeou is currently the President of Taiwan. The history of Taiwan started out being a place for people to mine for goods. There were wars in Taiwan in order to get the countries sulfur which is the main indgrediant in gunpowder. China won the war and started mining. Japan then fought over Taiwan with the Chinease and gained control from 1895-1945. In 1979 the United States signed an agreement to be allies with Taiwan. In 1996 Taiwan still under China held it's first presidential election. It was won by Lee Teng-hui. In 2000 Taiwan experienced a political change when Democratic Progressive Party member Chen Shui-bian won the election. They are always switching between DPP and KMT political party. They still don't have the unification from China.
